ERHARD LORETAN

BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1959. He lives in the mountain village of Crésuz, Switzerland. Receiced his diploma as a certificaded Swiss mountain guide in 1981.

Started climbing at the age of 11. Four years later he made his first demanding climb by scaling off the rocky east ridge of the Doldenhorn (3,645 metres)

Go fast and light is Loretan's philosophy. Against the Himalayan standards he has only roped himself once on the way to the eight 8,000 metre summits he's climbed with Jean Troillet, often by-passed bivouacs or stoves, carried minimal reserves of food and drinks.

In january 2002 Erhard faced his perhaps greatest challange this far, he was accused for killing his seven months old son by shaking him to his death. After this incident, no new news have been heard about Erhard Loretan. Perhaps the mountains will help him to heel from this tragedy.
