GÖRAN KROPP

BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1966 in Eskilstuna / Sweden. Killed on september 30 year 2002 while rock climbing the route "Air Guitar" on the Sunshine Wall ouside Seattle / Washington. At the start of the route that was to become Görans last, his final climbing partner, Erden Eruc has carved into the rock:

"With a thumb up
Kropp on Top!
Göran lives
1966 - 2002"

Göran, or "Kroppen" as he was called by many, was the most famous Swedish climber due to his adventure to Everest; he packed all his climbing equipment on his bicycle, biked from his home in Jönköping / Sweden to Kathmandu, carried alone all equipment and food to Base Camp, climbed Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen, and biked home again!

This was not the only hard climb he had acomplished; in 1990 he climbed the higly complicated Mustagh Tower, reaching the summit together with Rafael Jensen. This was the fourh ever expedition to succed. Göran was the 10:th person on the summit.

Three year later he climbed K2, reaching the summit alone, the solo climb from the highest camp to the summit and back was a first. The descent became a struggle for life in a storm. Everybody thought he was gone when he suddenly stumbled into BC, totally exhausted.

After this he succesfully soloed the ordinary route on Broad Peak in just 17 hours.

In the spring of 1997 Göran climbed Shisma Pangma together with his girlfriend Renata Chlumska, he said this was his last 8,000 metre summit. He
beleived to have consumed his luck in the Himalayas and that the extremes above 8,000 metre may effect your brain if you push it to hard.

Despite this statement he once again returned to Everest in 1999 and made a second ascent together with Renata.

During spring 2000, Göran teamed up with Ola Skinnarmo to try reaching the North Pole by ski. Half way, Göran made a mistake and his thumb got a serious frost-bite. It was decided that Ola was to continue alone whil e Göran would be evacuated by a helicopter. He returned saftely home and his thumb was healed. And Ola reached the North Pole... This was Görans first and only unsuccessful expedition.

What Görans himself considered what to become his "last great adventure" was to sail alone to the Antrctica, ski to the south pole, turn around, ski back and sail home again. In a TV interview, Göran said he actually was considering to skip the sailing and row all the way from Sweden. If he would set a record it should be hard to copy or repeat. Sadly Göran never got a chance to try his endurance and power on this trip...

"Climbing is the best sport because it demands a lot of willpower, physical and mental strenght to succeed. The travel is also interesting - going to foreign countries, experiencing diffrent cultures and being in the middle of the nature, with magnificent scenery and mountains. It is heaven to do a Himalayan expedition..."
